Big Brother 28 just delivered one of the biggest surprises of the season — and it has nothing to do with a blindside. On Thursday night, LaTrice “Lala” Verrett became the new Head of Household after outlasting the entire house in the fan-favorite Wall competition, and in doing so, she made franchise history.
At 58 years old, Lala is now the oldest houseguest to ever win the Wall competition on a regular (non-celebrity) season of Big Brother. The only person to top her age doing it is Kato Kaelin, who won the Wall at 59 on Celebrity Big Brother 2 — a separate, celebrity-cast edition of the show.
How the Wall Competition Played Out
The Week 5 HOH competition kicked off shortly after Lyric Medeiros was evicted in an 8-3 vote over Melody Morris. True to its reputation, the Wall comp turned into a marathon: houseguests had to hold onto a tilting wall while getting hit with freezing water and slime, all while trying to outlast one another.
One by one, the house fell off in this order:

- Taylor Brown
- Barrett Pfeiffer
- Rick Devens
- Dee Valladares
- Melody Morris
- Mallory Aurichio
- Chuk Anyanwu
- Yash Patel
- Drew Campbell
That left just two houseguests standing: MMA fighter Kamu Kirk and Lala. After roughly an hour and a half battling it out, the feeds cut out — and when they came back, Lala was wearing the HOH key, in tears.
Outgoing HOH Haley hosted the competition but was ineligible to compete, having held the title the week before.
Why This HOH Win Is a Bigger Deal Than It Looks
Beyond the age record, Lala’s win matters because of the timing. The Red Corner alliance — made up of Dee, Devens, Kamu, Haley, and Chuk — had controlled HOH for four consecutive weeks, steamrolling the house’s direction almost entirely on their terms.
Lala is not a member of that alliance. Her win instantly hands power to someone outside the group that had been running the game, and early indications suggest she plans to use it.
